St Ives Environs Walk instructions


  1. Starting at the Bus Station, head South crossing station road near the junction with the Market Square. On your left, in Station Road, are Hyperion Auctions, The Woolwich and Nuts Bistro. On the right is Market Hill.
  2. Cross straight over leaving the Market square on your right. Pass the old toll house, now the Tote, on the right and walk down Priory road. The remnants of the Priory Barn wall can be seen on the right at the junction with Wellington Road.
  3. Continue straight crossing the stream. Ahead is an island that used to be the location of a signal box on the railway line linking St Ives with Huntingdon, and before the days of the railway line as a loading area for river barges. The railway bridge used to cross the river Ouse at this point, passing to the left of the old Mill.
  4. Turn left across the stile and into the meadow. Veer right and walk down to the river for a view of the Bridge and quay. Return across the stile and stream. This step can be omitted if you'd prefer not to walk in the meadow
  5. Having crossed back over the stream turn left into Wellington Street. As you walk down Weliington Street pass the Oliver Cromwell Pub on your right.
  6. Wellington Street emerges onto the Quay from where there is a great view of the Bridge. Connies Traditional Tearooms is on the right.
  7. Turn left across the Bridge from where you have a view of Hemingford Meadow. Walk past the Dolphin Hotel on the right and onto The Causeway.
  8. Walk across The Causeway from which you have a view of Wilhorn Meadow on the left.
  9. At the South side of The Cuaseway, turn left and left through the gate onto Wilhorn Meadow. Follow the circular walk around the meadow. In spring it is a mass of yellow Buttercups and other spring wild flowers. In the winter the meadow may be very boggy or even under water. You can skip the walk around the meadow if you wish
  10. Retrace your steps across The Causeway, past the Dolphin Hotel on your left and across the Bridge back to the town centre.
  11. Walk up Bridge Street turning left into Merriland. Proceed past the Nelsons Head on your left and onto the Broadway.
  12. Walk along the Broadway passing Floods Tavern and the Norris Museum on your left. Take the opportunity to go into the Norris Museum if it is open.
  13. Continue along The Waits and straight ahead onto the footpath towards the Parish Church. Walk past the Church on your right and through the kissing gate at the Western end. On the left is Holt Island. If Holt Island is open cross the footbridge on your left and take the opportunity to walk around it.
  14. Continue West on the Thicket Path, marked by the footpath sign near the bridge to Holt Island. Pass the Cromwell Scout headquarters on your left.
  15. After a short distance you will come to Noble's Field on your left. On the right is the golf course. Turn left into Noble's field and take the opportunity to stroll along the river bank. Across the river is Hemingford Meadow.
  16. At the far end of the field it narrows and you rejoin the Thicket Path. Turn right and head back towards St Ives. At the Cromwell Scout site turn left and walk up the road.
  17. After about 200m you come to the intersection with Westwood road. Turn right and walk past the graveyard on the left. A short distance past the junction with West Leys road turn left up the footpath. Follow the footpath to a small lawned park.
  18. Turn right and follow the edge of the park to Ramsey road. Cross over the road and you will see Slepe Hall Hotel to the right.
  19. Bear left up Ramsey road and turn right down the footpath just before Westfield School. On the left is Westfield School, and a little further on Eastfield School. At the junction with Broad Leas Road, cross over and walk down Warners Grove.
  20. Turn right at the end and then left onto a footpath. Follow the footpath for 25m to Warner's Park. Turn right at the park and head South back towards the town. Take the opportunity to wander around the park or sit under the trees for a moment.
  21. Stay on the footpath as it leads away from the park. Shortly it becomes Crown Walk. Follow the lane to the intersection with East Road where there is a pelican crossing, and the Strict and Particular Baptist Church is ahead.
  22. Cross and walk down the alley, Crown Place, past the Hyde Away Cafe and the Music Box and through the archway to the town centre, Crown Street. To the right is the Royal Oak.
  23. Turn left and walk through to Market Hill. On the left is the Corn Exchange and in the centre of Market Hill is the statue of Oliver Cromwell. Opposite is the Freechurch.
  24. Walk down to the end of Market Hill and across the pelican crossing to arrive back at the starting point at the Bus Station.
